Overview

Orbit is a free, open source task manager for software teams. It combines issues, boards, sprints, projects, documents, notifications and analytics in an interface that takes clear inspiration from Linear. Keyboard controls and a command palette make it quick to move around once you learn the workflow.

The project also includes an OAuth protected MCP server. Approved AI assistants can read issues, summarize completed work and create tasks using the same permissions as the person who connected them. GitHub integration links pull requests to issues, while Slack support covers notifications and issue previews.

Orbit uses the Apache 2.0 licence and has no paid tiers or feature restrictions. You can run it with PostgreSQL, Redis and S3 compatible storage. The documented deployment options include Vercel and a standalone Node server, with MinIO available for locally hosted file storage.

Self hosting remains in preview. Standalone deployments do not currently support realtime updates, and the supplied Docker Compose configuration is intended for development rather than production. Operators must replace its default credentials, configure authentication carefully and follow recent releases because older versions do not receive backported fixes. Orbit is worth testing for small technical teams, but important production workloads should wait until the project completes its readiness work.
