Snipe-IT
Free open-source IT asset management for tracking hardware, software licenses, and accessories. Audit trails, barcode support, REST API, and LDAP integration included
Quick Start
docker run --rm snipe/snipe-it Overview
Snipe-IT is a self-hosted IT asset management system that replaces the spreadsheet most IT departments are embarrassed to admit they still rely on. You track hardware assets, software licenses, accessories, and consumables, assign them to users or locations, and get a clear audit trail of where everything is and when licenses expire.
The workflow is straightforward: add an asset, assign it to a user, and the system logs the full history. Barcode and QR code generation works out of the box for physical tagging. Check-in and check-out handling makes it practical for equipment that moves between people, and maintenance scheduling keeps repair and service records attached to individual assets.
A REST API handles integrations with monitoring tools, ITSM platforms, and directory services. LDAP and SAML support covers single sign-on for larger organizations. Two-factor authentication and HTTPS-only cookie enforcement are defaults, not add-ons.
The self-hosted version has been completely free since day one. Over 6,000 organizations use it, covering more than 20 million managed assets. A cloud-hosted option is available for teams that want managed infrastructure.
Hardware requirements are modest and the Docker setup is straightforward. The main trade-off is scope: Snipe-IT is focused on IT asset tracking and does not extend into ITSM ticketing or helpdesk territory, so teams needing both will still need a second tool.
