Virola is a self hosted team messenger for organizations that want chat, meetings, files and task tracking on infrastructure they control. It covers private chats, group rooms, discussion threads, voice and video meetings, screen sharing, remote control, file storage, task boards and searchable history. Server installers are available for Linux, Windows and macOS, while client apps cover desktop and mobile platforms.

The strongest fit is a small team that wants a private Slack alternative without running a heavier stack like Mattermost or Rocket.Chat. Virola also has LDAP support, topic based rooms, user roles and room level permissions, so it can work for more formal internal communication setups.

The important caveat is licensing. Virola is self hosted, but the server is not fully open source. The GitHub organization publishes an MIT licensed web client and API docs, while the server is distributed as packaged software. It also does not support end to end encryption, relying instead on self hosting, encryption in transit and encryption at rest. Pricing is freemium: small teams can run it free, while larger teams use paid monthly, annual or perpetual licensing.
